Driving in Ankara makes most sense when your plans extend beyond central sightseeing or your accommodation includes convenient parking. For a museum-and-city-break itinerary, consider leaving the car parked and using rail transport. The important decisions are where you will leave the vehicle, which documents apply to you and how toll charges will be settled - not simply the rental price.

Decide which days actually need a car

Separate an Ankara visit into city days and excursion days before renting. A vehicle may be useful for combining rural stops that would otherwise require several transfers. It is less compelling when the day's main task is getting from your hotel to one museum and a restaurant.

Price both versions of the trip. A three-day rental is not automatically better value than a one-day rental followed by public transport. Add the hotel parking charge, fuel, motorway tolls, possible delivery fees and any additional-driver charge to the comparison. These are budgeting categories, not claims that every rental company levies each fee.

Book the parking arrangement as carefully as the room. Ask whether it is on-site or an affiliated garage, whether your vehicle fits its height restriction, whether re-entry is included and whether a space is reserved. "Parking available" is not the same promise as a guaranteed overnight bay.

Save the garage entrance, rather than only the hotel reception, in your navigation app. For the first arrival, a clear driveway and unloading plan can be worth more than a slightly shorter route.

Foreign licences and foreign vehicles have different rules

Current Turkish consular guidance reproduces the rule allowing foreign nationals to drive on a foreign licence for up to six months from entry. The same guidance gives Turkish citizens using foreign licences a different period: up to two years. Do not apply one category's allowance to the other. [1]

That time limit does not by itself establish whether your particular licence, translation or international driving permit is sufficient. Confirm the documentation applicable to the issuing country and the rental company's conditions before collection. Carry the original valid licence and the identity and rental documents the provider requires; a photograph should not be your only plan.

Bringing a foreign-plated vehicle raises a separate customs question. The Ministry of Trade launched its foreign-vehicle online service on 23 March 2026, allowing users to inspect their vehicle's permitted stay and related information. Use that vehicle-specific record rather than assuming its permission lasts as long as your driving-licence allowance. [2]

This distinction particularly matters during longer stays: permission to drive, permission to remain in the country and permission for the vehicle to remain are not interchangeable.

Read the parking category before comparing prices

BELTAŞ's published tariff image, labelled February 2026, distinguishes roadside spaces, open car parks and covered car parks. The following examples are in Turkish lira and apply to the stated operator categories, not every private garage in Ankara. [3]

Parking category Up to one hour Four to six hours Eight to twenty-four hours
BELTAŞ open car park TRY 100 TRY 140 TRY 200
BELTAŞ covered car park TRY 100 TRY 150 TRY 250

The same tariff treats some roadside locations differently. In the castle historic area and on Necatibey Street, the first fifteen minutes are free; the subsequent bands do not match the generic roadside rate. A three-hour stay falls in the TRY 200 band there. The published rates include VAT. [3]

For a five-hour visit, the table therefore suggests TRY 140 in the open-car-park category against TRY 150 in the covered category. That is a calculation from the tariff, not a promise that a suitable space will be vacant beside your destination.

Photograph the posted tariff and retain the ticket. Establish the overnight boundary and collection arrangements before walking away. Do not interpret an impound-storage price found in a search result as an ordinary visitor-parking rate.

Park-and-ride is useful, but its free parking is conditional

EGO identifies operating park-and-ride sites at Macunköy, Milli Kütüphane and Koru. Its published conditions provide free parking for users making two rail-system card validations between 07:00 and 23:00. Drivers who do not use rail pay the applicable hourly tariff using the specified transport cards. [4]

Choose a site that naturally fits your approach to the city. There is little benefit in driving past your destination simply to reach a different free car park. Confirm the correct entry lane and card procedure at the site before assuming your two journeys will qualify.

Do not treat this as free overnight storage. Nor should you assume that a bank-card tap automatically satisfies a scheme described in terms of Ankara Kart and Başkent Kart. Clarify that detail when entering, particularly when everyone in your party uses a different payment method.

EGO's notice also lists further stations under development. Those names are expansion plans, not evidence that another car park is already operating. [4]

Settle toll arrangements before the journey

For foreign-plated vehicles using tolled motorways and bridges, KGM requires an HGS account with enough balance. Its guidance provides ways to correct an unpaid passage on KGM-operated roads within fifteen days; it also warns that unpaid charges can obstruct departure at the border. [5]

Treat that correction period as a remedy, not a reason to postpone payment. Different road operators and rental billing systems can introduce additional steps. Before driving away in a rental, ask who manages the HGS account, how charges are passed on and whether administration fees apply.

Keep a record of the collection date, return date and vehicle registration. When a later charge arrives, those details make it possible to compare the billing with your rental period. Do not buy or load a second account for a rental vehicle without the company's instructions.

Leave room for restrictions and the return journey

Follow the signs and temporary controls on the actual street, even when a navigation app proposes a convenient shortcut. A driveway, pedestrian entrance or apparently empty roadside space is not proof of lawful vehicle access. For a major event, ask your hotel whether its usual approach remains usable.

On departure day, plan the car return as a separate appointment before airport procedures. Allow time to refuel if required, find the correct return entrance, record the vehicle's condition and complete the handover. Avoid placing an ambitious final sightseeing stop between the last practical fuel opportunity and the rental deadline.

The most useful Ankara driving plan is selective: drive when the vehicle gives you genuine flexibility, then park once and stop trying to use it for every short movement.
